Historically, the term Woolyback referred to a person who was from out of town, and worked in the Liverpool docks as scab labour. It is also thought to have been used to refer to men who would use a sheep’s fleece to protect their back, when delivering coal from mines surrounding Liverpool in the early 1900s.
